Many children are suffering from obesity in well-off countries. This has aroused grave concerns among health authorities in general and parents in particular. This essay attempts to examine the underlying causes of this issue and offer some viable solutions.

A root cause of this problem is what parents serve children on the table. This is also applicable to the food provided at school canteens. Unlike the past when daily food programs were rich in vegetables and fruits, today’s diets are usually full of sugar, carbohydrates and fat. This is mainly because these food sources are cheaper and more readily available both at homes and at school. The most pragmatic way out is to educate parents and introduce laws that mandate school authorities to coordinate measures to provide more healthful and balanced options for children.
Another leading cause of rampant childhood obesity in advanced countries is lack of physical exercise on a fairly quotidian basis. At school, children mostly experience a sedentary lifestyle. When they arrive home, they usually spend time in front of a television set or play video games. Gone are the days when they had the chance to play outside or help parents with daily chores. To tackle this problem, schools should incorporate more physically demanding activities into children’s schedule and parents should encourage children to lead a more active life by doing sports and limiting television time.
